What is normal, anyway?

I keep hearing people say, “I just want things to return to normal.” Or “I can’t wait for everything to go back to normal.”

I say, “Just what is normal, anyway?”  Normal is what we are used to. Our routine is our normal. The fact is things will never return to the “normal” that we were used to. Too many things have changed. We will (and are) creating a new “normal”.  Yes, some things will go back to what we were used to before all of this happened, but we have changed. Our environment has changed. The way we do business has changed. The way we relate and interact with others has changed.

Some of those changes are good. We have learned what really is important to us. We have learned more about ourselves and our loved ones than we ever thought possible. We are learning to prioritize what matters most. We are learning to live and work differently.

This is and will continue to be a time of growth for each and every one of us. Change is often uncomfortable and difficult but without change, it is hard to grow and improve as a person and as a society. Not only are we learning how to live and work differently as individuals, but we are also learning as a community, a society. Some of the things we thought were so necessary, well, we are now seeing that they didn’t really matter at all. We can function and even thrive in very different circumstances than we thought possible.

Take some time to reflect on the things you are learning. Jot down some notes, or journal about how you are adapting. Look at the things in your life that have changed and notice how you are coping. I believe if we all took a few minutes every day, or even once a week, to reflect we would be surprised and proud of how well we can adapt. Think about how you want your life to look once the mandates are lifted and life once again changes for us. Make some plans to create your new “normal” don’t just let it happen.

We are being given an opportunity to create a way of life with intention. I am excited to set those intentions and have a plan in place to make my life more of what I want it to be than what circumstances dictate because I didn’t have any plans and just let it happen.

Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life. What do you want your new normal to look like? Do you have some plans? Have you set your intentions?

I’d love to talk with you and help you figure out how to set intentions or even identify what it is that really matters to you in the future. Give me a call! Let’s chat and explore the possibilities.

Here’s to your new “normal” and whatever you want it to look like. Let’s step into this new world with a plan. This is your time, your chance to create a new way of life. I wish you well!
